As a current dietetic intern, I wish someone had given me a list of what I would need in order to succeed ahead of time. Now that I have had some internship experience, I know the most important items interns need as they go through supervised practice.
Disclaimer: There may be additional personal items based on the specific internship, but these are what I needed as a dietetic intern.
This is the ultimate packing list for those soon to be dietetic interns.
1. Binder
It is important to track hours as you go through the internship and a binder is a great way to keep these logs together and organized chronologically.
2. Agenda
I am a planner and so are almost all other dietitians to be. An agenda for all of your due dates, classes, and schedules is going to be necessary to stay on track and organized.
3. Laptop
A good working laptop that is reliable to complete assignments and projects is a must.
4. Notebook
I recommend a notebook to jot down notes and important things to remember for the RD Exam. This way you will have something to look back at when studying.
5. Calculator
A calculator is going to be important throughout the internship to complete formulas, equations, and other mathematical problems.
6. Water Bottle
Whether it is an emotional support water bottle or one with stickers all over it, it is important to stay hydrated so you can feel and do your best as an intern.
7. Active Hobby
I suggest finding something active that you like to do. Whether it is hiking, yoga, cycling, or lifting weights, having an active hobby will help support the mind and body throughout the internship.
8. Bedtime
Yes, I am putting a bedtime on the packing list. Sleep is going to be crucial in your internship success. Creating a routine that allows for optimal sleep (7-8 hours) will help support your mental and physical health.
